Pest Control in Altea – White Walls, Pine Mountains, and the Pests Between

Altea is the town that visitors photograph and residents protect fiercely. Its old town — a cluster of whitewashed houses with blue-tiled domes rising above cobblestone streets — sits on a promontory overlooking the Mediterranean. Below, a pebble beach and modern beach road connect to the N-332 and the coastal sprawl of neighbouring Alfaz del Pi and Albir. Behind, the land rises sharply into the Sierra Bernia, a limestone ridge that defines the horizon and whose pine-forested slopes run directly into Altea’s residential periphery.

Altea has attracted artists, writers, and an international community that values its quieter character compared to Benidorm, just seven kilometres south. But the same geography that makes Altea picturesque — elevation changes, pine forest, coastal exposure, centuries-old construction in the casco antiguo — creates a set of pest conditions that residents must understand and manage. The pests here are not overwhelming, but they are consistent, and ignoring them invites problems that compound quickly in Altea’s warm, humid microclimate.

Problem

The Problem: Where the Sierra Meets the Sea

Altea’s pest dynamics are shaped by the transition from mountain to coast compressed into a very short distance.

Sierra Bernia and the pine forest. The Sierra Bernia rises to over 1,100 metres behind Altea and its slopes are covered in Aleppo pine, the primary host tree for the pine processionary caterpillar. The residential areas of Altea la Vella, the hillside villas above the old town, and the inland urbanisations along the road to Callosa d’en Sarria all sit within or directly adjacent to pine forest. Each winter, processionary caterpillar nests appear in the canopy, and from February the caterpillars descend through gardens, across roads, and into residential zones. The risk to children and dogs is significant and recurring.

The coastal strip. Altea’s beachfront area, the Albir promenade extension, and the lower-elevation residential zones experience the standard Costa Blanca coastal pest profile: sewer cockroaches emerging through drains during summer heat, mosquitoes breeding in urban standing water and garden irrigation, and ants trailing into properties during dry spells. The sewer infrastructure in the older parts of the beach area is aging, and cockroach entry through compromised drain connections is a persistent issue.

The old town. Altea’s casco antiguo is beautiful but presents the same challenges as any centuries-old Mediterranean settlement. Stone walls with deep cavities, shared party walls between adjoining properties, gravity drainage through ancient channels, and limited access for modern pest treatment equipment. Cockroaches and wasps are the most common issues in the old town, with wasp nests forming under eaves, in wall cavities, and behind shutters each spring and summer.

Why It Gets Worse

The Wasp Problem Nobody Mentions

Altea has a more pronounced wasp problem than most Costa Blanca towns, driven by the combination of old-town architecture and proximity to orchard and garden environments.

Paper wasps (Polistes dominula) build open-comb nests under eaves, behind shutters, inside wall-mounted letter boxes, and in any sheltered cavity on a building exterior. In Altea’s old town, where buildings are densely packed and facades offer dozens of potential nesting sites per property, wasp nests are almost universal from April through October. A single nest may contain 20 to 30 workers, and multiple nests on one building are common.

European hornets (Vespa crabro) nest in larger cavities — hollow trees, wall voids, and occasionally attic spaces. They are less common than paper wasps but their larger size and defensive behaviour near the nest make them a more serious concern for families with children.

Wasp activity peaks in late summer and early autumn, precisely when outdoor living is most enjoyable. The terraces and roof gardens that make Altea’s old town so appealing become contested territory. Professional nest removal in spring, before colonies reach full size, is far easier and cheaper than dealing with large defensive colonies in August.

The Pests of Altea

Altea’s hillside-to-coast geography produces five main pest challenges.

Processionary Caterpillars

The pine processionary caterpillar (Thaumetopoea pityocampa) is Altea’s most location-specific pest. Properties in Altea la Vella, on the road to Sierra Bernia, and in the elevated villa developments above the old town are within the caterpillar’s annual descent zone. Nests appear from November, and the caterpillars — covered in urticating hairs that cause severe allergic reactions — descend from February through April.

The risk to dogs cannot be overstated. Curious dogs that investigate the caterpillar processions or their ground-level nests can suffer fatal anaphylactic reactions and tongue necrosis within hours. Veterinary clinics in the Marina Baixa region see multiple cases every spring. If you have pine trees on or near your property, annual inspection from November and professional treatment before the descent season is essential.

Cockroaches

Both American cockroaches (sewer-dwelling, emerging through drains) and German cockroaches (indoor-adapted, breeding in kitchens and bathrooms) are present throughout Altea. The beach-area infrastructure and older parts of the town have the highest cockroach activity. American cockroach emergence peaks during July and August heatwaves when underground temperatures drive populations upward. German cockroach infestations in apartment buildings spread through shared plumbing risers and require coordinated building-wide treatment for lasting results.

Mosquitoes

The Asian tiger mosquito (Aedes albopictus) breeds in standing water throughout Altea’s residential areas and bites during daylight hours. Garden irrigation systems, ornamental pots, and poorly drained balconies are the primary urban breeding sites. The common house mosquito (Culex pipiens) breeds in larger water bodies and feeds at dusk. Altea’s well-watered gardens and the irrigation channels feeding the remaining agricultural land around Altea la Vella both contribute to mosquito populations.

Wasps

Paper wasps (Polistes dominula) are the most visible pest in Altea’s old town during summer. They nest under eaves, behind shutters, in wall cavities, and in any sheltered exterior space. European hornets (Vespa crabro) occasionally establish larger nests in wall voids and hollow trees. Early-season nest removal (April to May, when colonies are small) is far more manageable than mid-summer intervention when nests are large and workers are defensive. Professional removal is recommended for nests in inaccessible locations or near areas used by children.

Ants

Argentine ants (Linepithema humile) form persistent trailing invasions of ground-floor and garden-level properties during Altea’s dry summer months. They enter through the smallest cracks in walls and around window frames, seeking moisture and food. The extensive gardens of Altea la Vella and the hillside residential areas provide ideal habitat. Gel bait stations targeting the colony’s food-sharing network are effective; contact sprays cause colony fragmentation and should be avoided.

Solution

The Altea Prevention Plan

Altea’s compact geography means your prevention strategy depends on whether you are on the hillside, in the old town, or along the coast.

For Sierra Bernia and hillside properties (Altea la Vella, elevated villas):

  • Inspect all pine trees from November. White silken nests are clearly visible against the green canopy.
  • Arrange professional removal or Bt injection before February. Do not attempt to remove nests yourself — the urticating hairs become airborne when nests are disturbed.
  • Clear dead vegetation and pine needles from building perimeters to reduce caterpillar crossing zones.
  • Keep dogs leashed on hillside walks from January through April.

For the old town (casco antiguo):

  • Survey the exterior of your building in April for new paper wasp nest construction. Small early-season nests can be removed safely; established summer nests should be handled by professionals.
  • Check behind shutters, inside letter boxes, and under any eaves or overhangs.
  • Seal gaps in stone walls where cockroaches and wasps access interior cavities. Expanding foam or mortar pointing reduces harbourage significantly.
  • Install drain covers on all floor drains and apply cockroach gel bait around pipe penetrations.

For the beach area and modern residential zones:

  • Install stainless steel mesh drain covers on all floor drains to block sewer cockroach entry.
  • Apply gel bait behind kitchen appliances every 8 to 12 weeks from March through November.
  • Eliminate standing water weekly — plant saucers, blocked gutters, and AC condensation trays are the primary tiger mosquito breeding sites in the urban area.
  • Install fine-mesh screens (18x16) on all windows and doors.

For apartment communities across Altea:

  • Push your comunidad de propietarios to fund building-wide treatment of shared sewer risers and communal waste storage areas twice per year.
  • Coordinate annual wasp nest inspections of the building exterior as part of the comunidad’s maintenance programme.

Your Next Step

Altea rewards attention. The white-walled old town, the views from Sierra Bernia, the quality of light that drew artists here in the first place — none of it is diminished by the pests, as long as you take them seriously. Inspect your pines in November. Clear wasp nests in April. Seal your drains before June. These are small acts that protect a way of life worth protecting.

The residents who enjoy Altea most are the ones who have learned its rhythms — not just the fiestas and the seasons, but the practical maintenance that keeps the beauty accessible and the home comfortable.
