Cockroaches in Tenerife: What Holidaymakers See
Seeing a cockroach in a Tenerife hotel room or apartment is common and does not by itself mean the property is dirty – the island’s year-round warmth and humidity support outdoor cockroach populations that occasionally wander indoors. If you see one:
- Photograph it before reporting, if you can do so safely – it helps staff confirm species and decide on treatment
- Tell reception the same day, using “He visto una cucaracha en la habitación” if language is a barrier, or simply point to the photo
- Do not crush it in a fabric-lined area (sofa, mattress seam) – this can spread egg cases; use a tissue and flush, or let staff handle it
- A single sighting in a large resort is usually isolated; repeated sightings across several nights in the same room justify asking to change rooms

Mosquitoes in Tenerife
The honest picture: mosquito bites on Tenerife are far less frequent than on mainland Spain in summer. Outside of periods after rainfall and areas near golf courses, barrancos (ravines) and irrigation, biting activity is low. Ordinary mosquitoes (Culex species) breed in any standing water, so hotel pools, fountains and plant saucers are the usual local source when bites do happen.
Aedes aegypti and the Tiger Mosquito
The yellow fever mosquito (Aedes aegypti) was detected on Tenerife between 2017 and 2023 and has since been eradicated through targeted control campaigns. The Asian tiger mosquito (Aedes albopictus), now established on the Spanish mainland, has not established on Tenerife so far. Health authorities continue monitoring; travellers do not need to take special precautions beyond standard repellent use.
