Menorca is the Balearic Islands’ quieter sibling – a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve known for pristine beaches, historic ports, and a slower pace of life. Are There Cockroaches in Menorca?

Yes, but less than on Mallorca or the Costa Blanca. Menorca has no big resort strip and far fewer high-rise blocks, so pressure is lower overall. Sightings cluster in three places: the old port drainage of Maó and Ciutadella, apartment blocks in the calas that sit empty all winter, and stone-walled fincas in the countryside.

Holidaymakers: A Cockroach in Your Villa or Apartment

Seeing one cockroach in a rented villa in Cala Galdana or an apartment in Son Bou does not mean the property is dirty. Most holiday homes stand empty from October to May. Drain traps dry out, and the first warm nights bring strays up through the plumbing.

• Run every tap and shower for a minute when you arrive to refill the drain traps
• Close shower and floor drains at night if you have seen one – a plug or a wet cloth works
• Tell the owner or agency if you see several over consecutive nights; that points to a building or plumbing issue they need to treat
• Keep food sealed and take rubbish to the contenedores each evening – summer heat speeds everything up

Mosquitoes in Menorca

The tiger mosquito reached Menorca later than the rest of the Mediterranean coast. The island’s environmental observatory (OBSAM) first confirmed it in 2015. Within a few years it had spread across the island, and Ciutadella was warning residents about it again in 2024.

Closing Up a Holiday Home for Winter

Most Menorca pest problems start in the months nobody is there. Before you leave in October:

1. Cover every drain – shower, sink, floor and patio drains – with a mesh cover or a sealed plug. Trap water evaporates within weeks
2. Place gel bait under the sink, behind the fridge and by the water heater, so anything that gets in meets bait first
3. Remove all food, including pet food and opened packets, and defrost the fridge with the door propped open
4. Empty anything that holds water outside, and cover the pool or aljibe tightly
5. Ask a key-holder to run the taps once a month if you can – it keeps drain traps sealed
